Andrew J. Baker wants 'Andy's Website' to be accessible for everybody. The information here will help you make changes

to your computer to make browsing easier. In the future I shall be updating this site with further accessibility features.

How to use Access Keys in your browser:

Internet Explorer 5+ (PC):

Hold down the 'Alt' key, press the number of the Access Key, release both keys, then press 'Enter'

Firefox (PC):

Hold down the 'Shift' and 'Alt' keys and press the number of the Access Key

Safari (Mac):

Hold down the 'Ctrl' and press the number of the Access Key

Please note: Your browser may or may not support Access Keys.

Downloadable files - PDF Files:

Invented by Adobe, Portable Document Format (PDF) is the published specification used by standards bodies around the

world for more secure, reliable electronic document distribution and exchange. It helps us preserve the look and integrity of

our original documents.

Adobe Reader is free software that allows users to easily and reliably view, print, and search PDF files using a variety of

platforms and devices. It can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/

Adobe also has a free online conversion tool for PDF's. This conversion service will convert to text Adobe PDF files that

are in English and most West European languages.

Using the Tab Key:

You can use the TAB key to navigate through the main features of the page such as links and form fields:

Press the TAB key to move forward to the next feature

or press SHIFT and the TAB key to move back to the previous feature.

Note: Unless you change the default settings in Safari, you will need to press Option and the TAB key to move through

each link on the page.

Pop-ups in Andy's Website:

If you have a browser pop-up blocker activated you will need to disable it for full access to the content in Andy's Website. Alternatively, most pop-up blockers can be configured to allow pop-ups for sites you select whilst still blocking pop-ups from

other sites. Please refer to your browser help for details on how to disable your pop-up blocker or allow pop-ups for this site.

Change Your Computer Settings:

There are lots of changes you can make to your computer to make browsing the internet a better experience. If you want

to alter the way you see, hear or use a website, you can change options in your internet browser.

The BBC and Ability-Net have developed a website called My Web My Way. It has comprehensive and up-to-date information on changing your browser settings for Windows, Mac and Linux users.

Changing Text Size:

In Internet Explorer: Click the View menu, then select Text Size and then choose larger or largest (the default is medium). Alternatively, hold down the Ctrl key and scroll the mouse wheel (if you have one). From the keyboard you can increase or decrease the zoom value in 10% increments. To zoom in, press CTRL+PLUS SIGN. To zoom out, press CTRL+MINUS SIGN. To restore the zoom to 100%, press CTRL+0.

In Netscape: Click the View menu, then select Text Zoom and then choose the size you would like (the default is 100%). Alternatively, hold down the Ctrl key and at the same time, push the - or = key.

Changing Text, Background and Link Colours:
Most browsers have options allowing you to choose the text and background colours you prefer when viewing Web pages. You can use these options to make the text more legible if you find certain colour combinations difficult to read.

To change colours in Internet Explorer:-

Open the Tools menu

Choose Internet Options

Click the Accessibility button

Select the 'Ignore colors specified on web page' checkbox and click OK

Click the Colors button on the Internet Options dialog box

Deselect the 'Use Windows Colors' checkbox

Select your colour preferences and click OK.

To change colours in Firefox:-

Open the Tools menu

Choose Options

Click the Colours button from the Content tab

Deselect the 'Use system colours' checkbox

Select your colour preferences

Deselect the 'Allow pages to choose their own colours' checkbox and click OK.

Changing the Images:

Images: Decorative and functional images feature null ALT attributes. Other images on the site include descriptive ALT attributes.

Moving Images and Text: None of Andy’s content includes blinking or text or images, and none of the site will cause your screen to flicker. Animation has been kept to a minimum, and is generally illustrative of content already on the site.

JavaScript: The site has been configured to allow user's access to its full range of functionality whether or not they have JavaScript enabled in their browsers. Where JavaScript is used, it is only used to enhance the user experience. It is never essential.

This site concentrates almost entirely on web-based news items and site links. Registration is simple and personal profiles less prominent.

del.icio.us:

Primarily set up to enable registered users the ability to store all their favourite web links on the internet.

Facebook.com:

All information on Facebook is orientated from your own personal webpage however privacy settings enable users to control both the content and who has access to your page.

Twitter.com:

All information on Facebook is orientated from your own personal webpage however privacy settings enable users to control both the content and who has access to your page.

Reddit.com:

Displays lists of categorized websites and news stories and enables registered users to compile a list of their own bookmarked sites. Registration only requires a username, no email address or other information.

Stumbleabout.com:

Enables registered users to bookmark web links. Once an interest is registered, users will be sent links to similar pages.

Alt Text:
JavaScript: Images used on Andy's Website pages contain alt text (or alternative text), which provides a text description of the image for use with screen readers and other assistive technologies. In case where alt text would provide no information or would simply repeat surrounding text, alt text may be excluded.
